Princestamps: The 1971 Definitives - High Values 10p - Pinkish Mauve - This stamp showed the Winged Ox on the St Luke Gospels again and there are 2 dies of this stamp, look at the underside of the Ox and the colour of the lining is the die, Die 1 is lilac and Die 2 is Brown. The stamp in my image looks brown so its a Die 2 (Although its very hard to tell). At the time of issue 10p was worth a lot more than it was a few years later and was above all the major rates. Mint copies in either Die are worth 12 each but a used copy of Die 2 is only worth 1 while the used version of Die 1 is worth as much as mint. Make sure it has a watermark as the unwatermarked stamp is worth much less. There was never a second die! The outlines are a result of two colours overlapping and the changed order in which these two colours were printed: yellow + purple gives dark purple [lavender] and purple + yellow gives brown ...... A plate block of the lavender version can be seen in: http://hibernian-news.eu/product_info.php?products_id=1253 |
