Change In CCP3 Paper and Sheet Reprints: CCP1 paper was produced by Harrison & Sons, which was taken over by De La Rue in 1997. Following the acquisition, De La Rue Security Print upgraded the former Harrisons plant at High Wycombe. They then purchased the House of Questa, which is based in Byfleet in Surrey, in September 2002. Following this acquisition, they closed the High Wycombe plant, transferring some machinery to the Byfleet premises. This closure of High Wycombe may explain the nonappearance of CCP1 paper in recent years. I have been able to ascertain that CCP 3 paper continues to be supplied to ISSP by Tullis Russell. However, commencing with the ordinary gummed vending machine booklets issued on 6 August 2002 (2with 41c and 4.10 with 10 x 41c), there was a change in CCP3 paper. Although the paper still gives a dark reaction under U.V. light (on the front), the gum is less creamy and more off-white in colour, and has less of a shine when held up to artificial light. The 1 c and 2c values, which were the only original Bird sheet issues in the euro set to appear on CCP1 paper, were reprinted on this CCP3 paper. This occurred in early 2003. All subsequent new sheet values issued in 2003 and 2004 (7c, 48c, 60c Puffin, 65c, 75c & 95c) and ordinary gummed booklets (2 with 48c Peregrine Falcon and4.80 with 10 x 48c Birds) were only noted on this CCP3 paper as were late printings of the 41c sheet issue. Later printings of the 5c (August 2003), 10c (early 2004), 50c (late 2004) and 60c Jay (2003) have also been noted on this CCP3 paper variation. These four values, and the 41 c as referred to above, are the only values I have noted on both types of CCP3 paper. All the booklets mentioned were only seen on the later CCP3 paper. In the case of the sheet issues, the paper appears whiter on the front akin to CCP1 but this is not evident on the booklet issues. I have also been able to ascertain that this CCP3 paper has been supplied by De La Rue, although I'm unsure as to the place of manufacture. The De La Rue Group own Portals Batchford, a paper maker near Bath; however, the De La Rue website makes no reference to the manufacture of stamp paper by this subsidiary. It is very difficult to distinguish the two CCP3 papers when looking at single stamps, and for this reason I'm inclined to treat this as a variation rather than a new type of paper. The new Wild Flowers gummed issues and all recent commemorative and special issues appear to have been printed on the original Tullis Russell CCP3 paper. Self-Adhesive Booklets: New self-adhesive booklets My findings are as follows and extend those by Brian (maybe later editions of The Revealer contain more information). Only first print: 38, 47, 55 and the first 2 booklet. (Rusell-paper?) Only De la Rue: 7, 48, 60 Pu, 65, 75, 95, 2 book Chaff., 2 book Eagle, 4,10 and 4,80 books (Enschedé-paper?) Both papers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 20, 41, 44, 50, 51, 57, 60 J, 1 and 2. (Barry: I don't know how detailed you have been in your study of the Birds, but would appreciate extension of above list). |
