for Argentina
![]() |
1985. Banknote of 5 Australs (overprinted on 5000 Pesos Argentinos). Portrait of J.B. Alberdi. The original currency is "Pesos Argentinos", on the present note overprinted with the new exchange, the Austral. Pick # 321.
The person portrayed is the "Father of the Argentine Constitution". Born 24th August 1810. Was forced to leave Argentina at the age of 28 because of his opposition to the tyrant Juan Manuel Rosas. When Rosas was finally overthrown in 1852, the Argentines reorganized the republic, writing a constitution that was guided by his own writings. He later served as envoy to several European governments, and died in Paris on 19th June, 1884.
