All paper used in the first 10 years seems to be uncoated. About 1958 stamp paper with a watermark appears and stays till 1963. In the same period - 1960 - we see the introduction of coated paper. There is no combination of coated paper and watermark. A third factor coming up in the same period is the use of optical brightening agents. Before the PWPW had their paper machines they let their stamp [and banknote] paper come from two main sources:
After having the PWPW back on its feet after World War II they planned the install both paper machines in a special hall at Sanguszko street where the PWPW was housed. It took quite some time before they managed: MP 2 was transferred there in 1955; MP 1 in 1958. The two paper machines were operating quite differently: MP 2 was a long-sieve, "flat" machine; MP 1 was a round-sieve machine. It took the PWPW till 1989 to have a 3rd paper machine after having removed the oldest one [MP 2] in 1986. That is the MP 1 was during 1986-1989 the only one! |
A frequent phrase in the Handbook of Kiełbasa-Schoeni/Fołta is the mentioning of "papier o nierównym przeźroczu tworzącym regularny wzór siatki" ('paper that shows a regular mesh pattern when looked through it to see the paper wire reflected'). Literally it says: paper with an uneven transparency that results in a regular pattern of the wire! Which is rubbish! It is the regular pattern(s) of the wire that leave(s) a more or less clear impression on the paper in which the original pattern of the wire often can be recognized by the trained eye. Practically all stamp paper before the watermark period was thin to medium [7-9/100 of a millimeter]. K-S/F refer to this as "biały cienki głdki" [white thin smooth] or "biały średni głdki" [white medium smooth]. They also descern paper with or without the "regular pattern" which is NOT a hard characteristc! The symmetrical wire structure was always there! |
PWPW miał dwie maszyny papiernicze MP2 z 1955 r. maszyna płaska - z 1912 [Papiernia Wierbce nad Pilicą] do 1986 r. MP1 z 1958 r. maszyna okrągłowo-sitowa [?] - z 1924 [Papiernia Mokotowska] a dopiero w 1989 trzecia nowoczesna maszyna! Mój znak wodny L należy do MP2; mój znak wodny R należy do MP1. A jednak MP2 działała jeszcze długo obok MP1! Te dwa bardzo wydoczne wzory - n.p. z znaczków lotnicznych 50 zł - są z lat 1986 [symmetryczny] (MP2?) lub z lat 1987-> [asymmetryczny] (MP1? czy MP3?). |
