1988. Famous Faeroese writers.
From left Jørgen-Frantz Jacobsen (1900-1938), Christian Matras (1900-1991), William Heinesen (1900-1991), and Hedin Bru (1901-1987). Please note that at the date of issuance the writer Wiliam Heinesen had not yet passed away, so he is one of the few persons of the world that has been featured on a stamp while he was still alive, except for - of course - kings, queens and presidents of any country.
The story of building the Magnus-cathedral is remarkable. It is generally assumed that Erlendur, who was a bishop in the period 1269-1308, initiated the construction. For some reason this building was never finished. Legend has it that the Faeroese people revolted against the taxation and the heavy workload imposed upon them. If there is an element of truth in these legends, it may refer to the fact that the economic foundations for a project of this size were far to weak. The six groined vaults, which were to support the roof, were never erected, nor was the tower at the western end. The chapel, however, may have been finished with vault, roof and stone flooring, as well as the altar base. An avalanche in 1722 crushed the northeast corner of the church.
