It is a sheetlet with one stamp
depicting the painting "Dancing in the Inn's Smoking Room", made by the
Danish painter Emil Krause (1871-1945).
He visited the Faeroe Islands twice, in 1904 and 1932, and did this painting in 1905, showing the traditional Faeroese chain dance in the village Vidareidi at Vidoy. The original painting is at permanent display in the City Hall, Torshavn. The painting renders a splendid depiction of traditional life on the remote islands about 100 years ago. The face value, 25 kr., is intended for economy-letters until 1000 gr on the Faeroe Islands, and economy-letters until 500 gr to Europe. Scott # 438 |
Note that the painting exists in two versions. The second version (not shown here), is slightly darker and a little more detailed than the one depicted on the 100th stamp, and is displayed permanently in the City Hall in Klaksvik.
Krause was a trained painter, living in Farum, a suburb of Copenhagen c. 20 km north of the capital. In Krause's time Farum was a small village with only a few hundred inhabitants, mainly farmers. During the 1950s and 1960s it has grown to a modern community with about 18.000 inhabitants, beautifully located in a still semi-rural area, surrounded by big woods and deep lakes. Copenhagen Metro stops in Farum.
